Q: Society and media seem to try to convince everyone that men should give women flowers if they\u2019re trying to show affection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is that just media-driven fake news in an age of alternative \nfacts? Should I try to come up with some other random gift, like a \ncandle, to show that I\u2019m creative or unconventional?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: No, dummy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the latest issue of the Journal of \u201cNo Duh\u201d Science for Idiots*<\/em>, it was shown that women genuinely like getting flowers<\/strong>, it increases their happiness literally for days, and flowers even result in cognitive improvements in elderly populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, flowers seem to have special effects that other gifts don\u2019t have. Just buy the dang flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flowers serve no purpose for humans.<\/strong> At least, that\u2019s the logical<\/em>\n conclusion \u2013 you can\u2019t eat them and they\u2019re not particularly useful as \nresources. Some have medicinal value but not most of the \npopularly-cultivated varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, humans have spent thousands of years cultivating flowers for no purpose other than aesthetics and fragrance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, one evolutionary theory \nsuggests that some aesthetic things, like cultivating flowers, are \nbeneficial only because of the positive emotions they generate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, people were more likely to survive if they stopped to\n smell the roses \u2013 to enjoy the beautiful things in life. This causes \npositive emotions and those are beneficial to humans in survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, it could be a strategy for the flowers as well. More \nbeautiful flowers are more likely to be cultivated by humans, thus \nincreasing their survival strategy as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some researchers sought to test what exactly the effects of flowers in human behavior might be, and the results were published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STUDY 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers first sought to see the effect of giving women flowers<\/strong>. Does it result in genuine happiness, or fake\/feigned happiness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To determine the genuineness of happiness, the researchers explained the difference of various smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuchenne smiles\u201d<\/strong> \n(named after their discoverer, Guillame Duchenne in the mid-1800s) are a\n type of smile that has been identified in research as a genuine \nindicator of happiness. It occurs in infants, kids, and adults. It\u2019s \ncharacterized by contraction of both the zygomatic major muscle and the \norbicularis oculi muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
